On June 26, a roundtable discussion was held in Kyiv, organized by the publishing house “Yuridichna Praktika” with the support of the “Barristers” Law Firm.
▪️ The professional event was dedicated to discussing legislative issues related to the prevention of crimes against the foundations of national security, new judicial practice regarding crimes provided for in Section 1 of the Special Part of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, as well as other topical issues of law enforcement in this area of legal practice. ▪️ The event was moderated by Kostyantyn Globa, managing partner of BARRISTERS Law Firm.
▪️According to the moderator, the goal of the entire series of roundtable discussions planned by BARRISTERS in collaboration with “Yuridicheskaya Praktika” is to facilitate a discussion between the speakers and experts in the audience, with a particular focus on law enforcement.

▪️Serhii Ionushas, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on Law Enforcement, expressed confidence that this particular roundtable format would be quite effective in enabling legislators to adjust their activities in coordination with those who directly implement the provisions that members of parliament introduce into current legislation. He noted that at the start of the full-scale invasion, our legislation was not prepared for the challenges faced by the law enforcement system or for the realities unfolding on the ground. Therefore, as early as the seventh day of the war, Parliament adopted fourteen laws of critical importance to Ukraine, most of which were drafted by the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Law Enforcement. Some of these bills directly relate to the subject of this roundtable.
➡️ “We amended the Criminal Code of Ukraine to increase penalties for crimes against the foundations of national security under martial law. Recognizing the challenges facing the Verkhovna Rada and given that the occupying forces were quite close to the center of Kyiv at that time, we understood that it was absolutely essential to make changes specifically concerning the foundations of national security. The relevant law was signed as early as March 4, 2022, which gives an idea of the pace at which we worked to make the necessary legislative changes, including provisions to ensure the participation of civilians in the defense of Ukraine,” recalls Mr. Ionušas.
