Today, May 18, the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Legal Policy reviewed the documents of candidates participating in the competition for the position of member of the High Council of Justice under the parliamentary quota.

Following the review, the documents submitted by Oleksiy Shevchuk, a candidate for membership on the High Council of Justice and a partner at Barristers LLP, were found to comply with the requirements of the Law “On the High Council of Justice,” according to “Law and Business.”

Accordingly, O. Shevchuk has been admitted to the next stage of the competition—a special vetting process.

It should be recalled that earlier, the Ethics Council of the High Council of Justice had blocked O. Shevchuk’s further participation in the competition for the position of High Council of Justice member under the President’s quota. However, the candidate challenged the Ethics Council’s decision in court, and the prejudicial facts set forth in it were ultimately refuted by a Supreme Court ruling.

As reported by “ZiB,” in February of this year, the call for applications was announced for the competition to fill two High Council of Justice member positions allocated to the Verkhovna Rada. This is because the terms of High Council of Justice members Mykola Moroz and Roman Maselka are set to expire in August.

Recall that, in accordance with Article 6 of the Law “On the High Council of Justice,” a citizen of Ukraine who is at least 35 years old, is fluent in the state language, holds a higher legal education and has at least 15 years of professional experience in the field of law, belongs to the legal profession, and meets the criteria of political neutrality, as well as the criteria of professional competence, professional ethics, and integrity.

A total of 32 lawyers submitted applications to participate in this competition.
