Oleksiy Shevchuk, a partner at Barristers, LLC, spoke to the LHS audience about lawyers’ involvement in high-profile cases
On August 8, 2018, in Kyiv, experts from the Legal High School Discussion Hub discussed high-profile criminal cases.
In particular, Oleksiy Shevchuk, a partner at Barristers Law Firm, spoke about the role of attorneys in high-profile cases: “Unfortunately, since the creation of anti-corruption agencies, a complete distortion has taken place—in the media, in legal practice, and in the minds of 70% of our colleagues. People have started claiming that someone is guilty of something even before a verdict is handed down. This is influenced by the following factors: the poor training of prosecutors, the poor training of some attorneys, and the media’s complete ignorance of legal issues.”
Oleksiy Shevchuk is convinced that no one today can provide an adequate defense without teamwork in the public sphere. Moreover, every lawyer’s team should include good journalists. After all, when anti-corruption agencies were established, they were allocated an entire budget for public relations—that is, for working with the media.
