Alexander Shadrin, attorney and partner at Barristers, LLC, gave a guest lecture and led a hands-on workshop for students at the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (Igor Sikorsky KPI) as part of the course “Practice of the European Court of Human Rights.”

The topic of the event was filling out the application form for the ECHR.

During the session, special attention was paid to the following aspects:

• Identifying specific human rights violations in the presented factual situation.
• Identifying issues under Article 3, several paragraphs of Article 5, and a potential issue under Article 13 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
• A detailed discussion of the identified issues and the determination of potential violations to be raised before the ECHR.
• An analysis of the specifics of completing various sections of the application form: from presenting the facts of the case and information about the applicant to indicating the exhaustion of domestic remedies and preparing attachments.

Special attention was given to modern electronic tools for interacting with the European Court, particularly working with the eComms and r39 platforms.

The session provided students with a practical understanding of the intricacies of drafting applications to the ECHR and the specifics of human rights protection at the international level.
