50 searches, 13 people detained – Barristers, LLC is representing two suspects in a high-profile criminal case.

Partner, Alexander Shadrin, an attorney at Barristers LLP, and Alexander Tananakin, an attorney at Barristers LLP, are representing two suspects in a high-profile criminal case, in connection with which, last Saturday, July 27, 2019, 50 searches were conducted in Bila Tserkva, and 13 people were detained across Ukraine.

The Strategic Investigations Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Kyiv Region is investigating the activities of an organized criminal group that operated within the Kyiv Region and beyond. The preliminary classification of the offenses is under Part 4 of Article 189 (extortion) and Part 1 of Article 255 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (formation of a criminal organization).

On the night of July 29–30, 2019, pretrial measures were determined for the suspects. Of the 13 detainees, only two returned home from court after being placed under house arrest. One of them is represented by the “Barristers” Law Firm. The second client was ordered to be held in custody with the possibility of posting bail. For the other suspects placed in custody, the possibility of posting bail was not granted.

The defense attorneys disagree with the investigating judge’s decisions and will appeal them to the Kyiv Court of Appeals. The defense attorneys will also file complaints with the State Bureau of Investigations regarding police officers in connection with the unlawful detention of their clients, the unlawful use of force during the detention, and the unlawful seizure of their valuable property.
